
Recognised by the Association for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP), this R. Lewis award-winning project has benefited from a high performance and cost competitive coating solution.
The project started in January 2018 with an estimated 55,000 m2 intumescent paint package, with very challenging environments from category C1 to C4 and fire rating up to 120 minutes.
Working together with International Paint, we set about providing the best system and cost competitive intumescent coating options for the prestigious International Conference Centre (ICC) in South Wales; using International 2060C and Interthane 990.
All corrosive category C1 structural steel was coated with Interchar 2060C and due to the length of time during construction phase all steel was coated with Interthane 990. The car park is a C4 environment, the factory applied primer had degraded and failed and required mechanical abrasion to all rust and erection damage points. Spot primed before adding a series of coating protection these areas and specified structural areas are treated with International Interchar 2060C, Interguard 269 and finally Interthane 990 for 60- and 120-minutes protection of the structural steelwork.
R. Lewis provide a consistent level of dry film thickness (DFT) testing and quality control in line with ASFP TGD 11. Test procedures results have been periodically presented to John Sisk Main Contractor and also submitted and approved by the client’s NACE 2 independent paint inspector at Corrosion Solutions.
Three months into the intumescent package R. Lewis secured the fire stopping package. Originally split into multiple trade packages, the main contractor recognised the value in using one accredited specialist to undertake all of this work. With fire ratings ranging from 30 to 120 minutes, the initial package was for the protection of block walls and construction joints forming the required compartmentation. As the project progressed, we were awarded all penetration work in drywall partitions, flexible cavity barrier installs were then instructed and additionally the passive fire system solution offered to provide acoustic reduction in walls.
The fire stopping package has progressed well and ahead of schedule leading to the opportunity for us to tender for an estimated 11,680 m2 of soffit insulation. R. Lewis secured this package using PIR board to provide class 0 spread of flame to composite decking.
We also have a team of internal assessors that test and inspect passive fire stopping to ASFP TGD 17. R. Lewis are unique in this level of QA and while it is not a project requirement all findings are available to the client for complete clarity.
The consistently high quality of installations and the professionalism shown on site has ensured that a strong relationship has developed with the Main Contractor. Under instruction and in line the QA scope, R. Lewis have completed site inspections with reports for all passive fire protection work. This data is provided to the Main Contractor to ensure compliance for project hand over.
