Specification
The Avonmounth Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) is a new plastics recycling plant due to open in mid-2020. The plant is expected to cost £65 million and within 3 years reach its target to process nearly 100,000 tonnes of waste plastic every year into over 60,000 tonnes of recycled plastic for reuse across the UK.
R Lewis were invited to tender to implement two-hour fire protection to specific beams, columns and bracing and won the contract worth £480,000.
Solution
The fire protection solution needed to be carefully designed as we were faced with access difficulties with services having been attached in localised areas, which meant having to paint isolated locations and then bringing in the hanging/attached bracketry and secondary steel beams after coating them off-site.
In addition, being 120 minute Fire Protection solution and working to a tight deadline we were then challenged to bring the Dry Film Thickness (DFT) down. We decided the best solution was to isolate beams with ablative batt to reduce the Heated Perimeter (HP) which then of course reduces the final DFT.
We have a 23-man squad on site and the programme is expected to last 12 weeks.
