Avonmouth Resource Recovery Centre (RRC) Fire Protection

Specification

Construction of the £252 million Avonmouth Resource Recovery Centre (RRC) site began in Summer 2017. The centre will use safe, environmentally sustainable, and reliable technology to divert around 320,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste away from landfill. The ERF will also generate up to 282GWh of electricity which will power the facility itself and export enough energy to power the equivalent of 77,280 homes.

The need for a variety of complex specification and installation requirements meant several divisions of our team were tasked with ensuring the client received the services and support needed for the duration of the contract. This was especially challenging for all involved towards the end of 2019 when site works were held up for a period beyond our control and into 2020 when the pandemic affected large parts of the construction industry.

Solution

Throughout this project we have worked closely with the site teams to ensure that when work could progress in earnest that all available expertise and resources were provided.

The project was predominantly two hours fire protection, which included the drive through area where the Hilti soffit is located.

In other areas such as the under croft which is used as office space for the Admin MRF, only 1 hour protection was required.

Other works included:

  • Boiler hall and Tipping hall – FSI batt and cable management systems used.
  • Drive through – Hilti batt soffit details
  • Boiler, Crane grab, Bunker, Tipping hall & MRF – Rockwool beam clad
  • Bunker – Hempacore one ‘intumescent paint system’ used
