Intumescent coatings can be applied to steelwork, timber and concrete and are available in both waterborne and solvent based systems with decorative finish coatings applied dependant on substrate type, environment and overall performance specification. Applied by airless spray, roller or brush these coatings can provide up to 120 minutes fire protection. Spray applied coatings can provide fast, decorative and weight saving solutions to exposed structural elements required to perform in a fire.
Intumescent coatings are typically applied in low coat applications or for higher fire ratings and on inherently light weight structures in several coating film thickness applications to achieve the necessary protection.
The required wet film thickness total (WFT) and final dry film thickness (DFT) of the coating is calculated using the industry recognised HP/A factor (heated perimeter over cross sectional area) as described in BS 476 Part 21. Coating thicknesses will vary depending on the size of steel and the exposure of the member requiring protection.
In a fire situation these materials are designed to react during heat attack by swelling to form an insulating carbonaceous char over the surface that the coating is applied to.
R. Lewis & Co (UK) Ltd work with clients on a range of structural fire protection requirements offering versatile efficient specification solutions to ensure adequate substrate protection is provided and maintained at site.
During our work and on completion of coating applications we are able to produce records of who applied, which area the work was carried out in, what specified system was used to protect the area and when the work was done. Each area can be physically identified through this electronic data recording process with detailed drawings and photographic support available. You may also want to consider utilising our company’s contact information label that can be fitted to each section or area on site.
This scheme allows you to deal with future work effecting coated areas or maintenance of existing applications, using the contact details provided on the company label.
If you need any assistance or would like to find out more about this service or any additional support available through the company after sales to include training schemes, fire engineering, consultancy, site installations, project risk review and assessment services then please do not hesitate to contact us for more information.
