The finale of this year’s UKRO 2018 Challenge was the Tunnel to Towers 5km charity run; raising money for the Fire Fighters charity and charities associated with the emergency services and armed forces. Well done to everyone who took part, but we were particularly impressed with 2 members of our team; Scott Lewis came 1^st in the under 18s race and Jon Sommerfield came 3^rd overall.

Mr. Anthony Pitcher Senior Fire Safety Advisor to the Welsh Branch of Hospital Fire Officers invited R. Lewis to attend and present at the NHS’ WELSH HEALTHCARE FIRE SAFETY ADVISOR’S and NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF HEALTHCARE FIRE OFFICERS meeting held at Bronllys Hospital on the 14th September 2018.

We were pleased to sponsor the event and present to the fire officers on the subjects of ‘Building Fire Compartmentation Surveys, Passive Fire Stopping solutions and the company’s latest innovation the ‘Fire Break Injection System’.

This Fire Officers meeting was held at Bronlly’s Hospital on the 14th September with part of the groups consultation set aside for the subject of Cladding & Building Regulations. The Fire Break Injection System element of our presentation created much interest and discussion on the materials capabilities and potential suitability for building safety when dealing with ACM cladding constructions.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service are taking over Cardiff Bay from 28^th – 30^th September, hosting one of the UK’s largest rescue challenge event, the very first Tunnel to Towers 5k family walk/run and staging a Super Safety Village packed full of activities and entertainment for all the family.

On the 28^th and 29^th the prestigious United Kingdom Rescue Organisation (UKRO) Caerdydd Challenge will see more than 600 of the UK’s most skilled firefighters compete in staged rope rescues, water rescues, vehicle rescues and urban search and rescue contests in and around the Roald Dahl Plass. With SWFRS already boasting the World and UK Extrication Champions through their Bridgend Team, there is a lot at stake in this hotly contested competition with a range of national trophies and titles up for grabs.

On Sunday 30 September the Service will host the very first Tunnel to Towers 5k run and walk, organised by SWFRS’ very own Firefighter Fundraising Team based at Cardiff Central Station.  Originating in New York in honour of Firefighter Stephen Siller who gave his life to save others on September 11, 2001 at the Twin Towers, it is now held across the world and honours the dedication and sacrifice of all emergency service personnel.

This is the first time the event has been held in Wales and is open to all ages. All funds raised will support the Stephen Siller Foundation and the Fire Fighters Charity.

Running from Friday to Sunday the Service will also stage a huge programme of family friendly activities at the SWFRS Super Safety Village in and around the Roald Dahl Plass.  With multiple partners, including South Wales Police, Welsh Ambulance Service, members of Water Safety Wales, Techniquest and Sports Cardiff joining in, visitors can enjoy Virtual Reality driving simulators, walk-in hockey, police dog demonstrations, Techniquest workshops including hand held fire balls and steam ignition as well as choirs, dance, theatre and a display by the Red Devils Parachute Regiment Freefall Team.

Inside the Wales Millennium Centre Friday and Saturday until 2:00pm will be a special kid’s zone full of activities. These include; ‘Mud and Sparks’ a chance to experience and learn more about fire and fire behaviours around our indoor campfires, plus a giant Snakes and Flames board games for teams or individuals and craft activity.

Free workshops will look at the elements including Air Powered Boat Races exploring water safety, seed balls looking at environmental awareness and pyro writing exploring the safe use of fire, provide by educational community company EggSeeds there will also be a special bubble bike exploring the physics of air flow.

There will also be the chance for younger visitors to test our firefighter kit and try out some of our SWFRS jobs, working alongside our Water Rescue and Control Room teams and meeting our young Fire Cadets.

The UKRO Challenge is unrivalled for showcasing the incredible skill and commitment of global-wide emergency service personnel, replicating real-life emergency scenarios in disciplines such as: Vehicle Extrication, Trauma Care, Urban Search and Rescue, Rope Rescue and Water Rescue and visitors will be able to see this in action across the Cardiff Bay area.

We are proud to sponsor the United Kingdom Rescue Organisation 2018 conference, village and challenge event which takes place in Cardiff Bay from 27^th – 29^th September 2018.

This global gathering of the blue light services is expected to attract several thousand visitors over the 3 days, all of whom will have the opportunity to be part of the conference at the Millennium Centre.  Visitors will be able to explore product stands showcasing the latest innovations in the rescue sector, as well as meet charity groups who will be on hand for information and support. There will also be all kinds of “have a go” experiences for anyone to try.

A major part of this annual event is the rescue organisations multi-discipline challenge days which will run daily, with many open to the public over the course of this extended weekend.

R Lewis and Co are looking forward to meeting all those interested in learning more about these life-saving services and of course working in partnership with South Wales Fire and event organisation teams in September 2018.

In May, R Lewis and Co took part in the National Association of Healthcare

Fire Officers (NAHFO) conference held at the Mercure Hotel and Spa Daventry. We were one of 30 businesses from the fire protection sector invited to exhibit and share our knowledge and services with NHS regional health authority fire officers and hospital facilities and maintenance management teams.

Alongside multi-service networking, this three-day event provided an opportunity for product and service CPD input from a variety of industry related companies and service providers to the NHS and the general members of NAHFO. Attendees also had the chance to gain hands-on experiences of the latest technologies and innovations including Fire Authority ‘virtual reality’ training programmes and life and property saving equipment and product demonstrations.

Use of ‘MAPP’

This electronic application system tool assists in clarifying the effectiveness of existing passive fire maintenance contract work.

The application provides a check log for the user to identify where items have not been sufficiently maintained and this will in turn give the client prior information on the areas logged as part of any future contract installation action arrangements.

A data log including users details, date and time is created with a check log facility to produce a full detailed description on the condition of for example each install or compartment area viewed.

The recorded information can be used to identify whether areas have been properly maintained during the contract period. Individual logged area descriptions identified on the MAPP system will also enable the user to update drawings, attach photographic evidence and automatically produce individual survey data logs.’

‘Designed to aid all those responsible for building fire safety this passive fire protection application tool will enable the user to confirm that an external contractor has been maintaining systems to the correct standard when their contracted work is in progress and for sign off on completion.

The electronic application can be included as part of your buildings planned preventative fire maintenance scheme.

For estates, facilities and engineering teams in fact anyone involved in passive fire protection and building maintenance, this approach to on – going safety of occupants and the building they are in, can also be used to identify site specific area conditions prior to the start of new passive fire system installations.
